One easy way to cut back on your spending and save more is to cut back on eating out. The average American spends over $3,000 eating out each year. For Natives, that number probably varies based on where you live. If your rez only has a few restaurants or food stands, it’s probably a lot less. But for city Natives, eating out can add up.
Last year, Andi Murphy (from the Toasted Sister Podcast) and I (Monica) took on a “No eating out challenge” for a month. It was a challenge and also a lot of fun to see what we could make for ourselves. You can listen to the Toasted Sister episode about it here.
Andi is a world class home cook. Her food is delicious and looks good! This is a salad she brought to lunch on day 16 of our “No Eating Out Challenge.”
I’m not the worst cook in the world, but I will say I’ve made my fair share of not great food. I get into trouble when I try to make something healthier. Like these stuffed shells, I decided to blend several handfuls of spinach into the tomato sauce. The result was…well take a look for yourself.
But despite the mistakes, I really love cooking. So I’ve decided to take on the “No Eating Out Challenge” for the entire year! The point of the challenge is to sharpen your cooking skills and save money. Here’s the rules I’ve set up for myself:
RULES:
No eating out at restaurants except these circumstances
Family in town to visit, dates, or travel for work or if someone is buying.
I can spend up to $30/month at a coffee shop or cafe for writing or reading which is one of my favorite activities and something I really missed at the last challenge.
If you want to join me for a month, or longer, send an email to nativesonabudget@gmail.com. I’ll add updates and tips throughout the year.
